My Reader Profile

 Hi all,

I grew up being a voracious reader. I would read anything and everything that I could get my hands on. Then during my undergrad, I spent weeks on end trying to keep up with the three novels (and various other readings) that were assigned to me every week because of all the literature classes that I was taking for my English degree. I was apathetic towards reading for years and sitting down to read a novel that actually brought me joy was rare (even rarer if it overlapped with classwork).

At the beginning of 2021, I was determined to reignite my love of reading and roped both my mother and sister into doing a reading challenge. I set out with the goal to read 24 books but instead managed to read 39. This last year I again set a goal of reading 24 books and ended up reading 34. This year, I have a goal of reading 40, but much like the previous years, I hope to read much more than my goals.

I like to claim that I read a little bit of everything (it helps that my best friend actively suggests books for me to read outside of my comfort zone because he reads at least double what I manage to read). With that being said, romance novels, specifically contemporary romance (more cartoon drawings on the front cover rather than heaving bosoms), are my favorite to read. There is something about the novel being so formulaic that I find comforting. Plus, I am a sucker for a love story.

I am part of two book clubs. The first book club is run during only the spring and summer months because half of the members are teachers or professors. The second book club which has been dubbed "shadow book club" mostly because a few of us meet during the off months and discuss a book over dinner. I am also moderating a contemporary romance book club at my library.

If I am being honest, half the reason I have a Goodreads account is to stalk what my friends are reading and the other half is because I like to see the little progress bar (and the percentage) get closer and closer to completion. If you want you can keep up with what I am reading there:

At this time, I am currently reading Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution. This book was both a gift and a recommendation from my best friend.

  1. Hi Danyelle, I am also currently reading Babel (just barely begun) as I've been seeing so much hype about it recently and it seems right up my alley! I had a very similar experience during my undergrad getting bogged down by having to read like 3 books a week, so I'm glad that is a shared experience haha.

    1. It is nice (maybe nice is not exactly the word that would be best, but I digress) that others have had the same experience that I have. I know this is a common theme amongst my friends!

  2. Hi Danyelle! I relate so much to the experience of burning out on reading during my English BA. I actually loved most of the books I was assigned for class, but the feeling of never having time to finish them or really delve in as much as I wanted to left me with the idea that I was a "bad reader" or something. It took a while to get over - I'm not going to lie, the pandemic helped get me back in the saddle. Goodreads has been a major motivator as well, because I find it fun to discover new things I might not otherwise have found.

I have Babel on hold at my library! I'd be interested to compare notes with you & Elizabeth once we finish.

    1. I would love to chat about Babel when you all are done reading it! I feel as though I am going to disappoint the friend that recommended it to me as I am not having the same reaction that they are. I would be interested in seeing what others are taking away from the novel!

  3. Hi Danyelle! I love that Murder on the Orient Express is one of your favorite books. I read most of Agatha Christie’s books when I was in middle and high school, but my husband is just now getting into them, so I get to relive and reread with him. I wish I could say I read a little bit of everything, but unfortunately, I have found that there are genres that I just can’t get into no matter how hard I try. It’s really great that you can do that though!

    1. When I was little, my mom would have me read to her while she did the dishes. One of the books that I read to her, was "And Then There Were None." I think that it started a life long love affair with Agatha Christie and her novels.

  4. If you like a lot of world building, I definitely recommend Babel and Southern Book Club! Both authors seem to be meticulous world builders.

  5. Hi Danyelle! Like you, I lost my love of reading while I was finishing my undergraduate degree, which was in art history. I spent so much time memorizing the names of paintings that the last thing I wanted to do when I wasn't studying was to place my nose in a book! Since working at libraries, however, I find that I read quite a bit (I had a few years of reading 100+ books in a year), but since grad school began, I have been reading a lot less. Hopefully, I will reignite my love of reading again with this class!
