Week 6 Prompt

https://pin.it/3SbPaKW

In order to promote romance novels, I would like to create a "next read book jar." This would be a passive program. We would have this jar at the reference desk where library staff could explain what the jar is and what it is for. I have included a photo from Pinterest for reference. Instead of different genres, the different colors would be different romance tropes and ideas such as second chances, best friend's sibling, or fake dating.

On the left is a mock-up of the accompanying instructions for the jar. This would encourage interactions with patrons and be a passive way of providing reader advisory.  This could be an ongoing thing at the reference desk. We would be able to curate different genres every other month in order to keep the jar fresh.

Each slip would include the name of the book, the author, the trope, and the call number for the book. For example, a purple slip would read:

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
FAKE DATING - FICTION HAZELWO

  1. Danyelle,
This idea is so creative! I absolutely love it. It's funny that most romance novels seem to be able to fit into one of these categories.

    1. There many many more romance tropes! I chose only 8 of the most popular ones.

  2. Hi Danyelle, I also did a suggestion type jar for romance, but it only included titles and details such as rom com or historical romance. I really, really like including the popular romance tropes in the jar. I think that’s more helpful and interesting than just the type. I also like that this idea could be adjusted to multiple genres and changed throughout the year.

    1. Thank you! I think that with breaking it down to tropes you can include all sorts of romance books! There are so many more tropes that could be switched out to fit different collections.

    2. Hello Danyelle,
I love this idea! I think patrons will be much more interested in something that is close to the reference desk and will also allow them a wider choice than the iconic "Blind date with a book" style. I also love the many different styles of romance novel you offered, fake dating took me a second but they are great!

  3. Hi Dany, what a really cool idea! I'm going to borrow this for my library! I agree with Brooke that the trope idea for the jar is a much more interesting approach for this genre. I am not very familiar with the romance genre, but have found it to be much more complex and varied than I had thought as I've explored it for this book annotation.
